Based on this graph prepared by the DoE in the United States, the price of solar looks like it is about to go below the cost of coal and gas. At this point, the world as we know it will change drastically as people understand that the power they can purchase directly for themselves with solar photovoltaic panels is cheaper than what their utility is supplying them. Project over the coming twenty to forty years, with continued declines in the prices of solar combined with increasing cost of coal and gas, and you'll soon see that the sooner you invest in solar the sooner you'll be ahead of the energy game.
